Thirteen flood mitigation projects funded through the Louisiana Watershed Initiative are under construction, completed or have closings underway, with more projects expected to break ground later this year.
LWI has awarded nearly $900 million to 127 total projects statewide through the $1.2 billion CDBG-MIT grant allocated to the state following the 2016 floods. These projects help reduce flood risk through drainage and infrastructure improvements, flood storage, property buyouts, floodplain preservation and more.

“These projects are important not just for Region 5 but surrounding regions and communities as well. Regional cooperation is the essence of LWI and a proven method for long-term watershed resilience. These drainage improvement projects will help stormwater flow and drain more efficiently, reducing flood risks throughout our communities.”
Kelia Bingham, Region 5 Watershed Coordinator
“The Region 6 projects are part of the solution to our sustainability and resilience to future storms, along with long-term governance, planning and policy efforts. By combining these approaches, LWI can establish a sustainable framework for decision-making and achieve tangible results through targeted projects, ultimately driving meaningful change and improvement in the watershed.”
Pat Gordon, Region 6 Watershed Coordinator
